Mapúa tops Holcim sustainable design competition

Last May 5, 2019, Mapua University’s School of Architecture topped Holcim Sustainable Design Competition. The winning proposal “Haraya: A New Typology for K-12 Schools” was for building spaci0us and cost-efficient public schools that are more conducive for learning.

The brilliant minds behind the winning proposal are Dexter Pangan, Czarrina Hernandez, Kendrick Supnet, Erik Joshua Isip with the guidance of their class adviser Architect Perry Sanga.

Haraya: A New Typology for K-12 Schools

Proposes a playful school layout to enhance learners’ experience through active social interaction. The proposed project also aims to reduce construction and maintenance costs by using renewable local materials.

There were 13 other entries from eight schools from all over the Philippines. The winning geoup of students received a Php 80,000.00 and Php 20,000.00 for their school.

University of the Philippines-Diliman College of Architecture and Fine Arts students won the second place with their proposal for Modular and Lightweight Concrete House. Highly replaceable and can easily adapt to the changing needs of the urban poor.

Eulogio “Amang” Rodriguez Institute of Science & Technology-College of Architecture and Fine Arts bagged the third place with their proposal for a prototype coastal community center that would act as a base of operations for evacuation during storm surges.

Cara Ramirez, Holcim Philippines Vice President for Communications praised the winners and all the participants for the outstanding design concepts that were submitted to the competition from across the country.

Inspired by the “Next Generation” category of the global design contest LafargeHolcim Awards for Sustainable Construction, the Young Builders Challenge aims to encourage aspiring builders to have a more holistic approach to building encouraging them to ensure projects not just economically viable but also environmentally and socially beneficial.
