Davao City Holds Translation Hackathon to Promote Translation Accuracy and Love for Filipino Language

Google Philippines uses innovative ideas to harness love for Filipino languages through a month long event called “Love Your Language Translate-a-thon”. The event is in line with nationwide celebration of the Buwan ng Wika.

The Love Your Language Translate-a-thon aims to preserve and give appropriate representation to two major languages in the Philippines on the web and share it with the Filipinos and the world for better appreciation.

Google Philippines designed this project to enable more accurate translation of Filipino and Cebuano languages online, which will also pave the way for more relevant local content on the web. They also want to bring national pride by giving Filipinos an opportunity to participate in enriching our languages online.

The target is 10 million submissions at the end of August. Awards for top contributors are up for grabs at the end of the project.
In Davao City, Google Business Group Davao and Balud Books Your Story Your Livelihood are organizing a series of translation hackathons to gather people into translating and validating Cebuano and Filipino languages for Google Translate.

Sixty-four students from UP Mindanao BA Communication Arts Program attended the first leg last August 12, 2015. The top contributor for that leg submitted about 600 translations and validations.

The second and third legs were in Dreamwork Co-working Space and KOM Lounge last August 19 and 26. Virtual Assistants and Mommy Bloggers attended the legs, together with the co-working space business owners.

The Love Your Language Translate-a-thon organized by GBG Davao and Balud Books will culminate on August 29, 2015 in the BalayBalay 3D Architecture Puzzle Exhibit Abreeza Ayalla Malls. Everyone is encouraged to continue translating.

The experience was great, knowing that you are contributing to a cause that would help people understand your language better. Our entries may not be a hundred percent accurate, the contribution itself gives accuracy a possibility. Imagine a much better translation by google on our Filipino and Bisaya language, through this kind of events the bridge of communication will be strengthened.

Thank you for all the contributors and thank you most especially to the organizers of the event.

DigitalDavao is looking forward to contribute with your future activities.
